8 Activities For Kids At Home

3 min read

Schools are no longer open to slow the spread of COVID-19, and kids stay home due to the pandemic. Thankfully, learning doesn’t only happen in classrooms. Even while social distancing or self-isolating, your kids can keep learning through play, choosing activities for kids at home to keep them moving and learning.

You’re stuck indoors. There are tons of painting projects, inside crafts, and small-scale obstacle courses and activities that’ll hold their attention for long periods. Or, if you’re able to head to the backyard, there are fun ideas for bubbles, water-based activities, and activities that get their little bodies moving. Either way, we’ve got your recipe for happy kids. None of these require an electronic device or an app, so you don’t have to worry about too much screen time.

Here’s the eight activities for kids at home :

1.Reading books

While reading is always encouraged, literacy skills such as letter recognition, writing, reading and following directions, vocabulary-building, retelling a story, letter-sound relationship, rhyming, and communication can all be practiced during active play.

2.DIY Crafts

DIY crafts are the best activities for kids at home.

You’re stuck at home with the kids and have nothing to do, don’t despair! It’s easier than you think to grab the crayons, glue, glitter, and paint and let their creativity shine. These fun activities for kids are easy, DIY, and can mostly be done with everyday items around the house. You just need these sparks of inspiration to get the ideas flowing.

3.Pillow fort

There is probably no single child between 1 and 10 who doesn’t like to build and play in dens or caves. Children’s imaginations go wild with this activity. From planning the build – what will they use to make their den? To playing inside of it, each step is an absolute pleasure. Hopefully, they’ll be inspired to develop exciting, fun-filled role play or simply enjoy changing the scene and playing with their toys hidden away in their cave.

The easiest way to create a stable pillow fort in your house is through using a blanket or bed sheet and cover a table, or some other furniture moved together. You can make quite a spacious den using four chairs arranged in a square with the blanket placed over the backrests. Add few cushions added into the cave, and your kids will have a great time for sure.

4.A Housebound Treasure Hunt

Kids will learn to solve cryptic hints in this fun activity of treasure hunting.

Create a map of your home and hide small items around it. Mark each piece of a hidden treasure on the map. Explain the map to your little one and offer your support for the hunting game in case they need it.

If your kids are older, you can use word cards describing a place where you have hidden an item. Kids love this combination of a quiz and hunt. It’s hard not to get in on the fun, too.

Even once they’ve found all the treasure, why not get them to organize their own hunt? They can draw their own map or develop their own cryptic questions to send you on a great search.

5.LIFE SIZE DRAWINGS

This is one of the fun activities for kids at home. Stick a load of A4 sheets of paper together and place it on the floor. Encourage the kids to lie down on it and outline their bodies with a pen. From this moment on, there is no way to stop the kids from getting creative: color in, add accessories to the figures like stickers or stamps, design clothes with old material offcuts, or other things you might find in the art drawer. The kids will have lots of fun with the real-size copies, and you may have something extraordinary to decorate their bedroom wall afterward.

6.KIDS ADVENTUROUS HOME GYM

Home gyms for kids are great way to keep them busy and healthy.

Need activities for kids at home where they can release some energy? Transform your living room into a kid’s gym and create some fun and age-appropriate sports stations. Time jumping on the spot can be made more difficult for older kids.

A planking station is great fun as well. If you have a soft carpet or mattress, you can try some somersaults with them if they are old enough. Any other kind of gymnastic exercise which is performed only with their own body weight is excellent.

To make it more competitive, you can use the stopwatch to time the duration of each exercise. But make sure to stick to age-appropriate durations. It’s about the fun and switching back and forth between the stations rather than aiming for the next world record.

Even more, fun is it when mummy and daddy join in the kids’ gym activity, and afterward, you all deserve a special treat!

7.A ROADWAY CREATED ACROSS THE HOUSE WITH INSULATION TAPE

Playmats are undoubtedly a fun thing for kids. They give them a great setting to get imaginative with their toys. You could grab some tape and make roads all over the carpet. Think about how they will connect up, where they will lead, and what sights you might need to add along the way. You could also use the same technique with the life-size art portraits and draw your own scene on a ginormous piece of paper. Talk about what amenities the newly created community might need and what toys are going to live there.

8.Erupting with Fun Volcanoes

Science experiments are way too much fun for kids at home.

Volcanoes are genuinely lava fun. Fill a plastic cup two-thirds of the way, complete with water, and add five tablespoons of baking soda, one teaspoon of dish soap, and several drops of washable paint. Mix the materials. Put the cap on the ground, and form a mound of dirt or snow around the cup to just below its rim. Now comes the fun! Add one cup of vinegar and watch the lava erupt down the side of the mound. You can add vinegar several times until you need to add the base ingredients again. This is one of the best activities for kids at home.
