The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated each year on 11 February. It is implemented by UNESCO and UN-Women to bring women & girls’ role in science and technology into the spotlight. These organizations have collaborated with the institutions and civil society partners that are aiming to promote women and girls in the field of science. The General Assembly decided to establish this day to recognize their critical role in science and technology, through Resolution A/RES/70/212, on 22 December 2015.
This Day gives an opportunity to women and girls to have full access to science. Gender equality is a worldwide priority for UNESCO. Giving equal rights to women is an essential part of development. On this special occasion of International day of women & girls in science, meet these two girl prodigies who have accomplished tremendous things & have shown excellence in the field of science & technology at a very young age.
Aswatha Biju
The 13-year-old girl, Aswatha Biju, has been recognized as the ‘Youngest Paleontologist of India.’ She is from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and developed an interest in Paleontology at a very young age. Aswatha loves collecting shells since she was two-years-old and she has a good shell collection now. Her parents have always supported her a lot. Aswatha has several mentors from universities worldwide who guide her.
She has also got an award from Ficci Flo, a women’s organization, for her great works. This young girl aims to create awareness among people about the field of Paleontology. As in India, people are not much aware of this field. Aswatha is really an inspiration for all people, and her contribution to science can not be ignored.
Samaira Mehta
Samaira Mehta is a 10-year-old coding prodigy who fell in love with coding at a very young age. This little girl is now the Founder and CEO of ‘CoderBunnyz.’ It is a platform to encourage children to learn to code and become tech leaders. Samaira always loved board games, and she always loved computer programming too. But she didn’t like the fact that she had to do both of them separately. So, she thought if one can’t bring board games onto a computer coding screen, why not bring computer coding to a board game.
The little girl has amazed everyone by creating a company at such a young age. Moreover, inspired by the USA’s former first lady, Samaira started the initiative called Yes, 1 Billion Kids Can Code. She has proved that age is not a barrier if one is determined & hard-working.
Both of these prodigies have caught worldwide attention due to their skills. Moreover, Aswatha Biju & Samaira Mehta have won the Global Child Prodigy Award 2020 for their exceptional works.
The Global Child Prodigy aprreciates all the women and girls who are contributing to science and working hard to make the world a better place!
